I think everyone will agree with me when I say Nikola Tesla is one of the most intriguing, imaginative and weird geniuses to have ever lived.

Tesla, like the master storyteller he is, said, “I do not think there is any thrill that can go through the human heart like that felt by the inventor as he sees some creation of the brain unfolding to success…..Such emotions make a man forget food, sleep, friends, love, everything.”

Here are some facts about Nikola Tesla I bet you didn’t know about:

Tesla had an addiction to gambling in his younger years.

Tesla was addicted to card gambling. He would lose all his money on card gambling. Tesla’s parents had opposite thoughts about this. His father was furious about his gambling, while his mother thought that it was all just a phase. He eventually grew out of it, and never had the urge to gamble again.

Tesla credits his mother, Duka, for his inventive nature

“My mother was an inventor of the first order ……she invented and constructed all kinds of tools and devices and wove the finest designs from thread.” Tesla said. Tesla’s mother descended from a long line of inventors. According to Tesla, his mother would work from sunrise to sunset working on a lot of things for their family.

Tesla was more Visual than Logical

When creating his inventions, Tesla did rely on models, or experiments. He relied more on his intuition and imagination.

Tesla said “I needed no models, drawings or experiments. I could picture them all as real in my mind. Thus I have been led unconsciously to evolve what I consider a new method of materializing inventive concepts and ideas, which is radically opposite to the purely experimental…”

Tesla produced artificial lightning that no one has ever replicated

In Tesla’s Colorado laboratory, 1899, Tesla produced awesome artificial lighting crashes of millions of volts that reached up to 135 feet long! No one has ever replicated this.

Tesla’s high frequency oscillator “earthquake machine” caused Mark Twain to defecate.

Mark Twain, who was known for having digestive problems, was invited by Tesla over to his laboratory. Tesla instructed Twain to stand on the platform of Tesla’s earthquake machine. After around 2 minutes of standing on the platform, Twain abruptly jumped off and ran straight to the bathroom to relieve his bowels.

Tesla had a lot of obsessions and compulsions

Tesla had a strong dislike to human hair. He also disliked pearls, while crystals were pleasing. He senses a horrible taste in his mouth if he sees small squares of paper dropped in a dish full of liquid. Weirdly enough, he had a love for the number 3 and any numbers that are divisible by 3. His maids would send him 18 towels and he chose to stay in hotel room 207.

To be able to enjoy his meal, he had to lift each napkin then place them on a large pile on the table. In his last years of his life, Tesla fell in love with pigeons. Particularly with a white one with little touches of gray on her wings. “I loved her as a man loves a woman, and she loved me… As long as I had her, there was a purpose to my life.” Tesla said.
