School Safety

Schools are children’s second homes. They spend most part of their days at their school daily — most of their childhood in hindsight. Schools are where students pave their paths to success. A place where children spend the majority of their time should be a safe, violence-free space for them. Students should be able to learn, grow, be creative, be carefree, and most importantly, be themselves in an encouraging and uplifting environment. Being in an environment where they are motivated to explore and be interested, where they are encouraged to participate and learn more helps them to flourish and learn more effectively. A safe and engaging environment means fewer absences and effective learning with higher grades. Violence in any way – physical or mental impacts students negatively.

Schools should have a safe learning environment

A safe learning environment ensures quality learning. A safe learning environment means a healthy mental state of mind. With a healthy state of mind, students can retain more of what they learn and have better chances of performing well at schoolwork and extracurricular activities. Whether a student has been affected directly or indirectly by violence reflects on their success later on, and often it results poorly.

The safety of students in school is not a topic that should be debated. It should be known that a school must be a safe space. Children should not have to worry about whether they are safe while they study, parents and guardians should not have to wonder about and demand for a safe school environment.

Why is safety in the classroom important?

By safety we don’t merely mean school safety against physical violence, we mean mental well-being as well. The fact that mental well-being is crucial for a healthy and happy child cannot be disregarded. Whether it be a teacher or a fellow classmate who speaks harsh words at a student, it is bound to affect that person. This is an unnoticed issue that has a direct impact on students’ future and success. A small scolding when a child does something wrong may not look like a big deal but that particular incident might reflect poorly on their confidence.

Safety in a classroom depends upon students and teachers who are present there. Teachers must make an effort to make their classrooms free of stress for their students. Apart from important school work and delivering quality materials to their students, their well-being is also something teachers must pay heed to. Students should be taught to treat their classmates with kindness and respect from a tender age so that they learn its importance.

The database shows that over the past couple of years, many incidents have occurred that have shaken people’s faith in schools being a safe zone. School safety affects a student’s success to a great extent, nonetheless, topics as such are seldom paid attention to. Bullying, harassing, victimizing, even mass shootings at schools and colleges have started being rampant; they are top examples of ongoing violence in schools. They not only affect students’ mental and physical well-being at the moment, but it also hampers them in the long run. The shock and trauma impacts how they turn out to be in the future. Schools must foster a safe learning environment for students so that they develop a positive attitude and gain success later in life.

Many kinds of research conducted by experts over the years with a wide variety of samples have shown that students who studied in safe learning environments turned out to become more successful in their careers and lives later on. Hence, when you look for your safety school, confirm that school is a safe one. After all, what is school safety if it is not safe enough?
