How to survive engineering college?

I used to have anxiety attacks back in college. These cases were triggered by my lack of confidence in going to any of my engineering class. I wasn’t the smartest kid in any of them so I was always afraid that I’d do something stupid in class. Taking exams always scared the hell out of me. Why? Because I was always afraid of failing. I hated the thought of having oral exams where my professors would judge my knowledge in a certain topic right then and there.

I was also afraid to approach the smart kids in class. They were so intimidating. It doesn’t help that unlike what people normally think about typical engineering students, they were the rich and the beautiful achievers. They weren’t exactly snobs but I was afraid they’d reject me because I wasn’t like them. They were beautiful. They were rich. They were always at the top of the class. Heck, they’re even officers of different organizations and can handle being in relationships. How is that even possible? I can’t even handle my own drink.

Let’s talk about the professors in engineering school. They’re the worst! Heartless and insensitive to how students feel. Exams here, projects there, assignments in between. How do they expect us to get good grades when we have to know everything in one night? You come off as the strict terror professors that’s why I couldn’t find myself approaching you when I terribly needed your help. So much for being the guide that students needed for school.

I am ranting. That’s all I’ve been doing since day one of school. If things don’t go my way, I’d be too scared to fix things. I’d be too scared to ask for help. I’d be too scared to take risks. I’d be too scared to be the engineer I wanted to be. I was too afraid. That’s why I failed to be one. I failed engineering because I was afraid to do what was right. I failed to ask for help. I failed to believe in myself. I failed to see my potential as an engineer.

So take it from me. Take it from someone who wanted to be an engineer. To survive engineering, you have to be brave. Don’t be afraid to take chances in whatever field in engineering you choose. You will experience difficulties but that’s part of the deal when it came to studying engineering. There will be days when you’re shaken to the core. You will feel like giving up but do not be afraid to go after what you want no matter how impossible it may look to achieve. I repeat, to survive engineering, please be brave.
