Nowadays, almost everyone is making use of cloud technology to save and share their precious files. If you’re using Google Drive and/or Photos on PC and Mac, be informed that both of these apps are going to be eliminated starting December 11th, 2017 and will be completely shut off in March of next year.

It may sound alarming, but don’t fret too much because these apps already have a replacement. It’s a single app called Google Backup and Sync. Google Backup and Sync handles both photos and data at once. For business and enterprise users, they are currently being shuffled to Drive File Stream which is now being widely released after it was limitedly launched in March of this year.×0/2017/09/07/56b7a394-10cc-473d-95ef-11fbec085129/google-drive-to-backup-sync.jpg

The replacement app Backup and Sync allows you to backup and sync photos and files (as it is appropriately named) from PC folders, USK keys as well as SD cards into the cloud, and therefore making it available anywhere. The original Google Drive was not that convenient since it required you to use two separate apps for files and photos. This affected users’ storage space dramatically, because if you uploaded images to Drive, it counts against your space, but if you upload them to Photos using the “high” settings, it doesn’t. Also, PC backups are now a more automated process.

The Drive File stream, an app that is the business and enterprise version of Backup and Sync, was also fully launched by Google. It has more features that are good for teams, including on-demand file streaming as well as access to Team Drives.

Here are some differences between Backup and Sync, and Drive File Stream. If you want to see the more detailed features, you can always search Google’s help pages.

So don’t worry too much about losing the old app, since there will be a better version that will replace it. According to Google, it will alert current Drive and Photos users about the requirement to migrate to the new system. Backup and Sync is currently already available for download on the Google website.
