The usual way to detect breast cancer is through a mammogram. It is an important screening test, in the form of an X-ray, which can detect breast cancer up to two years before the tumor can be felt by the person or the attending doctor.

Some women choose to self-examine but it can be unreliable without proper screening knowledge.

But a Mexican teenager has this idea of skipping the mammogram and self-examination for the early detection of breast cancer. 18-year-old Julian Rios Cantu, through his company called Higia Technologies, developed a bra as an alternative.

After his mother had to undergo a double mastectomy for her breast cancer which lasted years, he was inspired to find a solution that prevents others to suffer from the same fate. Julian invented the “auto exploration bra”.

The name suggests what exactly the bra does. It detects signs of cancer which explores the breasts automatically through the bra’s sensors.

Such sensors map the surface of the breasts, their texture, color, and temperature. The data are transmitted to a computer or a smartphone app via Bluetooth, where it is processed by a neural network.

When it comes to frequency of wearing the “auto exploration bra”, women only need to get it on for an hour in a week.

The company says it is “devoted to boosting women’s quality of life by attaining a professionalization of the self-exploration method for the early and effective detection of breast cancer”.

Having this bra hits close to the home country of Julian, which is Mexico, where getting a mammogram is often a difficult experience, with only 9.5 mammography machines per million people according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.
